This was our first “adventure” with Milicka and it was the begging of a beautiful friendship with travel.
Kolkata
We arrived from Europe directly to Kolkata and apart of the local airport (which size is comparable to small bus station) the first real India jumped on us during the taxi ride to our hotel or more precisely a Buddhist guesthouse where we booked 1 night in advance. I never saw so many people pissing or shitting just off the road in my whole life than in that 30 minutes ride. Just the feeling was overwhelming. Once we recovered in our room we went out to explore the city.
These are our impressions written down in our diary:
- Kolkata is one of the last cities in the work where you can have riksa man running and pulling the carriage. As we arrived with our big bags 50 year old man with just piece of cloth around his body without any shoes was begging us that he will give us a ride and we wasn’t able to resist it.
- The smells, colors and poverty is something which I never forget
- So many homeless people living on the streets some with clothes, some almost without anything
- Everybody is begging for something by touching you (the physical contact is not pleasant at all)
- Kolkata was the city of Mother Theresa
Looking back, Kolkata is still a destination that you need to visit in order to see real India.
Varanasi
Varanasi is considered to be a holy city. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and Hindu believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. The mighty Ganga river serves to carry bodies after dead as well as washing dishes, clothes, animals and people. Bodies are either burned next to the river or are carried on a small boat to the middle of the river and thrown into it with rock tied to the dead body. The whole city is actually build around these rituals and the atmosphere is very immersible. In the narrow streets of the old city you can bumped into the funeral procession or people begging for money for a wood which is used for burnings. At the river bank people perform their spiritual cleaning and all around the city cows are walking everywhere as gods protecting the inhabitants.
Darjeeling
Under the hills of Himalayas one could get a relaxation if there wouldn’t be such a heavy traffic. As cars in India produce much more pollution compared to modern cars in Europe it was almost impossible to have a nice walk. Only in the tea plantations we could find little bit of relaxation.
Bodhagaya
In this small village Siddhartha became Buddha, therefore is worth to visit it. We stayed in a small temple guesthouse where a lot of “white” people were looking for spiritual re-born. It is well hidden in the countryside and its not easy to get there by public transport. Reserve some extra time.
Khajuraho
Famous Kamasutra carved monuments are actually ancient temples. Just rent a bike and spent a day cycling around the area.
Agra
Agra is one of the premium tourists destination due to Taj Mahal. Apart from obligatory Taj there are also some other interesting monuments such as Agra Fort. Its closed to New Delhi and its a must.
Dehli
Our first days in India would not have been such a shock if we had started in New Delhi. We were there just around Diwali so the streets at night were like a war zone (imagine New Years Eve in some European cities). This is now a modern city where you can find big shopping malls, nice restaurants and skyscrapers but you can also dive into the streets of old city and narrow alleys of the markets and finish your day at Jama Masjid.
There is a reason why they call it Incredible India.
